Nioh 2: Team Ninja Hint at Flexible Character Creation System

Define your own Samurai...

What’s the story with Nioh 2? Well, much time has passed since the developers Team Ninja unveiled plans for the next installment in the action RPG franchise. Since E3 last year, there has been very little to go on besides speculation. That said, let’s revisit the official titbits of information announced by the dev-team during the game’s teaser trailer. Thanks to an interview with Team Ninja at the PlayStation Live from E3 stream, we can construct a generalized picture. At least of where the franchise is headed. Here’s what we can expect from the hotly anticipated sequel.

During the PlayStation Live from E3 interview, the director of the first entry, Fumihiko Yasuda, said that Nioh 2 would bring “proper evolution,” and “not drastic change” when asked what the goal was when creating Nioh 2. However, despite being satisfied with the game’s reception, Yasuda admitted: “there were things we couldn’t accomplish at the same time.” So, based on these reflections, it’s safe to assume that there is plenty of ambition going forward.

Regarding the story, Team Ninja has kept the cards firmly close to their chest. All we know thus far, is that “Nioh 2 fits into the existing story” and will incorporate “larger character development” synonymous with the first game. According to Yasuda. Judging by the short E3 reveal, we can expect more dynamic, cinematic storytelling. However, the setting and era remain undisclosed.

Interestingly, when asked about the player reaction, and the influence it had on the development process for Nioh 2, the response was surprisingly candid. Yasuda said the following: “After the game was launched, one of the biggest requests that we had was to have the character creation.” He goes on to say: “Players will definitely be able to customize the details. Including gender and race.”

With that in mind, perhaps the days of an Anglo-Irish samurai are behind us? Sure, it’s a departure for the series. Though, it would appear to be in the fan’s best interests, due to popular demand. No doubt, the story will tie into the first in some way. Albeit, only time will tell what’s in store.

Furthermore, when asked what the team needs to get right in Nioh 2, Yasuda commented on “more satisfying deaths for players” and confirmed that a “free demo” would be available before release. Mainly, to implement fan feedback.

Finally, Tom Lee, the creative director at Team Ninja, encouraged by the success of the first entry, confessed that the approach would be different this time around. As a result, Lee said the team would be taking a less “cautious” and trepidatious” stance to development. Lee Summarised by saying, “The gloves are off,” and that this time around, “We’re gonna go in hard.”

One thing’s for sure; Team Ninja intend to take a bold new direction. Add to that a burning ambition to improve upon the original. Then, the chances are that Nioh 2 will be another must-play action RPG. It certainly looks as though Team Ninja is going to pull out all the stops with this one. The question is, can they impart changes that do the series justice.
