The Top 5 Most Scariest Games of All Time
Beware, beware, you're in for a scare...
|
Here we have it, folks. The top 5 most scariest games of all time, so brace up, for the fright of your life. The horror scene has been around for what seems like an eternity, spawning countless sub-genres and frightening the pants off us in the process. In this somewhat oversaturated market, we’ve witnessed heinous horrors come and go. Though, there is only a handful that leaves a lasting impression.
Join us as we relive some of the most unimaginably-twisted nightmares of the past, in our brutal bid to uncover the top 5 scariest games of all time. Better have those bed covers handy. Expect heart-stopping jump-scares, creepy atmospherics and gruesomely gag-worthy gore, all in the name of horror. Now we must face our fears and descend into feverish madness. God help us all.
Silent Hill (PSX)
First to kickstart the list is the sleepy town of Silent Hill and Konami’s counter-attack to Capcom’s zombie-infested zoo-park Resident Evil. The cult-hit débuted in 1999 and has haunted fans living memories to this day. Let’s make one thing abundantly clear; this game is an outright scare-fest. From the mood-shaping atmospheres drenched in dread to the vile abominations let loose on the world. The stark horror themes entrenched in Silent Hill still scare the living daylights out of me, and I continue to sleep with a gun under my pillow for protection.
P.T
Next up, we have P.T. Although the game never released and was scrapped midway through development, it earns a place on this list due to pure fear-factor alone. The brainchild of gaming auteur Hideo Kojima and master film-maker Guillermo Del Toro, P.T is a genuinely harrowing, one-of-a-kind roller coaster of dread.
What’s more, it’s guaranteed to blow your mind in the most literal sense. The game sees players walk through a corridor on a game-play loop, stalked by a less than friendly ghost (Sorry Casper) as off-the-cuff jump scares hit you repeatedly. Worse still, these malign moments of horror get progressively worse, until the cut-throat climax severs the nerves. If you don’t believe me, go and scout, some footage on Youtube, and see for yourself, if you dare! The best horror that never was. Curse you Konami.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Third to grace the list of the top 5 most scariest games of all time is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. A carnival of horrors and the manifestations of your worst nightmares all rolled into one — a trial of terrors flooded with dread and bursting at the seams with tension. The game ditches the cliched jump-frights of the genre, for a slow-burning sense of suspense. Enough to make your blood run cold. Even worse, with an unmatched atmosphere and spooky sound-effects that creep you to the core, each face-off with those grossly disfigured creatures that litter the catacombs becomes all too much to bear.
Fatal Frame 2
Moving on in the top 5 most scariest games of all-time list, we have Fatal Frame 2, known in Europe as Project Zero II. Without a doubt, this survival-horror, developed by Techmo is the most obscure entry to this list, and that conceptual originality works in its favor. Our natural propensity to look away from horror-inducing sights is terrifyingly put to the test. In Fatal Frame 2 players must take snaps of the omnipresent foes, that lurk in the shadows and linger around every corner. Hence, forcing you to face your fears and look death straight in the eyes. All this, via a first-person perspective. Prepare to be panicked out of your wits.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem
Finally, we have Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, the Gamecube exclusive developed by Silicon Knights. The morbid result of which is a Lovecraftian nightmare that brings the player to the brink of an existential crisis. The inventive and chilling ways in how it messes with the mind is a testament to the level of psychological torture it instills. That said, you’ll be calling the shrink after the first hour, trust me.
Of course, this personal list of the top 5 most scariest games of all time is just the apex of the iceberg and there are many games that journey to the depths of despair. Which horror titles take you to cerebral oblivion? Stake your vote in the comments.
