Red Dead Redemption 2 Insanely Fun Game
|
Red Dead Redemption was a ridiculously popular game when it was released in 2010. After eight years, Rockstar Games released Red Dead Redemption 2 to the same critical acclaim. It’s the third game in the franchise and a prequel to the original. This Western action-adventure game is an insanely fun romp through the 1899 western United States at the tail end of the era of the cowboy.
This prequel to the popular Red Dead Redemption game follows Arthur Morgan, a member of the Van der Linde gang in a Western fictionalized United States. Arthur is on the run with his gang after a job goes poorly. He’s tasked with earning money to help provide for the gang. Players have the freedom to move across the map, earning cash by bounty hunting, train robbing and even hunting. Arthur has to deal with his gang repeatedly pushing him back into the life of crime, the impeeding governmental forces, and rival gangs. While it isn’t exactly a rip-roaring sharpshooter, it is an excellent, if slowly paced, open world.
Rather than having a standard reputation, Red Dead Redemption 2 has an honor system that determines how good of a person that you are in the game, a mechanic that was plucked almost directly from the original game and reused as is. While Arthur is trying to leave the gang behind, they keep dragging him in and decreasing his honor in the community. Encountering strangers in the community and tending to their needs by either doing the morally right or wrong thing. This can affect future NPC encounters and your encounters out in the world. You can do one good and one bad playthrough, if that’s your style.
Nearly everything is the same for Red Dead Redemption 2, except for where it counts. The graphics have been greatly improved. Gameplay, while slow, is more in-depth and varied. The map is vastly larger, allowing for more exploration. Otherwise, it’s still the same action-adventure style, with horseback riding between settlements, plenty of hunting, and an even larger map to explore.
While the game is great, as I’ve said before, it’s pretty slow. A few people who picked it up were hoping for more of a Grand Theft Auto vibe, and it isn’t quite the case. Once you reach the epilogue, there isn’t much more gameplay left, unless you like to participate in the multiplayer gameplay. The story is broad and vast, so unless you feel the need to start from the beginning or to dive in to multiplayer. So depending on your preferred style of gameplay, you can decide if this game is worth the price tag. (Hint: it definitely is even if you only get one good playthrough out of it.)
Of all the games that I’ve reviewed, Red Dead Redemption 2 probably has some of the best numbers of all of them. It was insanely well received, and with good reason. It’s an excellent game, building on the gameplay and the emotional drama that had been created before. The resurrection of old players gives it the touch of curiosity and nostalgia that isn’t too heavy-handed. If you love open world games, like Skyrim, and are a fan of historical settings, not just westerns, this should definitely be on your list.
