New Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Update Adds Co-op, New DLC Available for Purchase

One of Nintendo’s most adorable spin-off games, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, received a new update earlier this week integrating into a new co-op multiplayer mode to the game. Nintendo has also announced a new chapter to be made available on March 14th to expand the courses to explore, more challenges, and new objectives to incentivize players to replay the original courses.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was a great addition to the truly expansive Mario spin-off games, providing a new playstyle and featuring two of the Mushroom Kingdom’s most underrated heroes, Toad and Toadette. The game has a scavenger hunt, puzzle style of play that limits the range of the characters (Toads can’t jump!) and offers difficult yet rewarding objectives to complete for each level. These levels provide a different setting and new challenges, making the setting whimsical and definitely within the Mario canon.

While the co-op content seems to be very limited in scope, which is pretty disappointing as the second player is just a pointer on the screen, a la Super Mario Galaxy, to help the actual player traverse through the world. It seems to be mostly geared toward couch co-op with kiddos you want to gently introduce into the world of Mario, it would have been more compelling and rewarding to allow both players to interact with the world somehow together. With such a limited scope as far as the level design, it would have been fun to see them integrate a stacking feature, like the Goombas, or individual skills for both Toad and Toadette to increase the challenge.

As far as the DLC is concerned, it will offer 18 new challenges and five new levels to traverse. This will be available now, with a more extensive chapter and objectives will be released on March 14th. One of the new objectives is to find a golden crown, which will help to inspire players to go back and find it in the previous levels. If you haven’t touched the game in some time, it might still be a bit challenging.
